Scope and content

This sub-sub-series brings together five items of sentimental value preserved by Lady Elgin. Two poems addressed to her and an address to Lord Elgin (files 1, 2 and 3) illustrate contemporary customs in producing laudatory verse and addresses, notably during viceregal tours. The polkas (file 4) reflect viceregal patronage and promotion of the arts and cultural activities. The memorial booklet (file 5) may have stimulated Lady Elgin to sponsor a biography of her late husband, engaging Theodore Walrond to to undertake the project.
