Scope and content

This sub-sub-series consists of a bundle of letters written by Lord Elgin to Mrs Cumming-Bruce (the mother of his first wife and grand-mother of his daughter Elma) includes two letters addressed to her husband. The letters focus on the health and well-being of their grand-daughter, Lady Elma Bruce, with occasional mention of his eldest son Victor Alexander (their god-son), his second wife and other family members, as well as his public responsibilities. This sequence of letters demonstrates close links to and overlaps with the letters written by Lady Elma to her grandparents, the letters sent Lady Elgin to them, and his letters to Mr Cumming-Bruce. The very broken sequence of dates here suggest that Lord Elgin addressed these family letters specifically to Mrs Cumming-Bruce when her husband was attending Parliament or otherwise absent from the family home of Kinnaird House, Falkirk.
