Scope and content
The sub-sub-series consists of a bundle of letters written by Lady Elgin to Charles Lennox Cumming-Bruce and his wife Mary Elizabeth Bruce demonstrates close links to and overlaps with the letters written by her step-daughter Lady Elma Bruce and her husband Lord Elgin to them. With few exceptions, Lady Elgin addressed the letters to Mrs Cumming-Bruce but clearly intended them to inform both grandparents about Lady Elma's health and development (she being their sole grandchild and heir), as well as significant aspects of the family's life. The style of writing about childbirth and childhood, family events and relationships with friends reveals much about contemporary conventions, society and mores, as well as perceptions of life in North America. The majority of the letters date between November 1846 and early 1855.
