Scope and content
Sub-series consists of the form and structure, and emphasis on public affairs, common to four of the five albums of clippings forming this series reflect their methodical production in the governor's office by his secretaries as a means of providing Lord Elgin with a ready source of information on contemporary public opinion and concerns, not only in the Province of Canada but also across the colonies of British North America and in the United States. Invitations to, programmes for and reports of social and cultural events appear intermittently. The presentation in neat columns and chronological order remained systematic through the period 1847-1854, while annotations at the head of each clipping identified the date and the name of the newspaper, periodical or other publication from which it was cut. When and by whom post-1854 materials were placed within the volumes remains uncertain. The fifth album differs markedly in structure and focus, covering 1846-1857 and drawing more from British than colonial periodicals. Its mounting of items on the recycled pages of a school exercise book stands in marked contrast to the neat presentation on large sheets of colored paper in the first four albums.
