Scope and content
A charcoal sketch of the interior of a cabin on board the H.M.S. "Hastings." Katherine Jane Ellice ("Janie") accompanied her husband, Edward Ellice Jr., to Canada when he was secretary to Lord Durham during his term as Governor-General of Canada in 1838. Lord Durham's suite left Portsmouth, England on the H.M.S. "Hastings" on April 24 and arrived at Quebec on May 27, 1838. The cabin depicted in this sketch appears to be Janie and Tina's. It resembles another of her works entitled
"Sentry will there be a Sunrise?", which shows Tina in profile looking out the window of her cabin.
Charcoal sketch on the verso of a watercolour removed from album. Original mount attached separately.
