Scope and content
Pencil sketch of two trees on a hillside, with country landscape in the background (probably English). Attributed to H.W. Burgess who signed other works in the album, including 1990-207-50X. Burgess was appointed Landscape Painter to William IV in 1826. He published a book on the appearance of trees in 1827.
As an illegitimate daughter of William IV, Lady Falkland was not able to commission important court artists. However, she was in contact with minor court artists, often those attached to William IV himself. These include Burgess, Ziegler, and Hayter.
