Scope and content
Marine sketch, possibly on a river or lake. Waterfowl in the foreground, sailing boat with raised side; small sailboat with raised sideboard in the midground; architectural sillhouette with docked sailboats on a point in the background. Mr. Burgess was appointed Landscape Painter to William IV (Lady Falkland's father) in 1826.
As a natural daughter Falkland could not commission court artists of the first rank. However, she was able to draw on artists such as Ziegler, Burgess, and Hayter, who had some connection with the court.
The inscription is in Lady Falkland's handwriting.
