Scope and content
The Dufferin Addresses are comprised of 3 volumes of bound addresses presented to His Excellency the Right Honourable the Earl of Dufferin, while Governor-General of Canada from 1872-1878.
They are expressions of the sentiments of Canadians from across the country during his tenure, and also include one joint address from the Senate and the House of Commons on the occasion of his departure.
There are 413 items including manuscripts solely comprised of script; illuminated manuscript; and also some bearing more elaborate vignettes and decorative artwork.
This address is a full page of text with a double border in gold, with a looped corner detail. It is addressed to Lord Dufferin on behalf of Band Chief, Ojibway Chief S. James. This is possibly Solomon James who was a chief from the Parry Sound area, who was active in writing petitions and in acting as secretary to the Grand Council of Indians, particulary those from Lake Huron and Southern Ontario (see collection files).
