A view of the dining table at an inn in Catskill, New York dated August 29, 1838. Seated at the table are members of Mrs. Ellice's family, including her sister, Tina, (Miss Eglantine Balfour), her brother, Charles Balfour, and her husband, Edward Ellice Jr. The guests are being served by black waiters and waitresses. Mrs. Ellice refers to one of them in her diary on August 29:
"We were much amused by the antics of one of the Black waiters who flourished the dishes over our heads in a most alarming manner." (Canada: Oberon, 1975. p. 82).
Watercolour removed from album. This work was originally glued to a secondary support. The album page, folio 20, was cut to frame the image that was glued to its verso. Original mount attached separately.
