Scope and content
An image of three characters from the play "Tom Thumb," acted on board the H.M.S. "Hastings." Members of Lord Durham's suite, including Katherine Jane Ellice and her husband, Edward J. Ellice Jr., came to Canada on board the "Hastings" in 1838. This watercolour shows one of the social activities on the ship. On the left is Mrs. Ellice's husband, Edward Jr., in the centre is Mr. Charles Buller, and on the right is Captain Maclure, all dressed in costume.
It is likely that Ellice painted this watercolour on or after May 26. On that date she recorded the following in her diary: "...At 10, the performance began - The Critic and Tom Thumb - were really well acted. C. Bullar as 'Puff' was perfect...Edward made a handsome giantess as Huncamunca and was well dressed. Ditto Mr. Maclure as the Queen of the giants dressed in a long black gown and a Widow's Cap..." (Canada: Oberon, 1975. p. 30).
Watercolour removed from album. This work was originally glued to a secondary support. The album page, folio 10, was cut to frame the image that was glued to its verso. Original secondary support and mount attached separately.
