Scope and content
A view of the interior of Katherine Jane Ellice's cabin on board the H.M.S. "Hastings" on the left half of the watercolour. On the right, a door with a mirror reflects the images of the artist in her nightdress, sketching from her cot, and her sister, Miss Eglantine Balfour ("Tina"), reading a book. This work is of particular interest because it depicts the interior of the ship and is also a self-portrait.
This work probably dates from May 28, 1838. In her diary, Ellice writes,"Made sketches of our cabins...Tina read some of Mr. Bedford's book aloud to me in her cot at night of which I meanwhile made a Sketch." (Canada: Oberon, 1975. p.31).
Watercolour removed from album. This work was originally glued to a secondary support. The album page, folio 9, was cut to frame the image that was glued to its verso. Original mount attached separately.
