Scope and content
Katherine Jane Ellice accompanied her husband, Edward J. Ellice Jr., Secretary to Lord Durham to Canada on board the H.M.S. "Hastings" in 1838. While on board the "Hastings", Mrs. Ellice made many sketches. On May 11 she mentions this watercolour sketch in her diary: "Mr. Bouverie and C. Bullar read aloud 'Paradise Lost' to us, while we sketched the rabbits which were allowed to run about the deck to stretch their legs..."(Canada: Oberon. 1975, p. 24).
Watercolour removed from album. This work was originally glued to a secondary support. The album page, folio 7, was cut to frame the image that was glued to its verso. Original mount and secondary support also included.
