Scope and content
Sailor carrying a flag for signalling purposes on board the H.M.S. "Hastings". Katherine Jane Ellice accompanied her husband, Edward J. Ellice Jr., Secretary to Lord Durham, on his trip to Canada in 1838. Lord Durham's suite left England for Canada on April 24, 1838 on board the "Hastings", and arrived at Quebec on May 27, 1838. While on the "Hastings," Mrs. Ellice made many sketches.
Watercolour removed from album. This work was originally glued to the verso of folio 6 so that the mount, which was cut, formed a frame around the support. Original secondary support and mount attached separately.
