Scope and content
Henri Beau was an employee of the Public Archives of Canada from 1915 to 1938, being employed in the Paris office specifically to copy views, portraits, etc. and to carry out iconographic research. See Pierre Lallier, Henri Beau (Musee du Quebec, 1992).
This portrait used to be identified as Marie-Élisabeth Rocbert de la Morandière, wife of Claude Michel Bégon, (1696-1755). However, the original portrait from which Henri Beau made this copy, is signed and dated on the verso: G Dubuisson fecit 1710. A comparison of this signature with a religious painting by the same artist (in La Rochelle, France Musée des Beaux Arts) has established that the sitter is not Madame Bégon, wife of Claude-Michel Bégon. She may be Catherine Guymont (1666-1754), wife of Michel Bégon de Montfermeil.
