This painting was commissioned by the National Archives of Canada from the artist Henri Beau, who copied a painting in private hands in France.
Henri Beau was an employee of the Public Archives of Canada from 1915 to 1938, being employed in the Paris office specifically to copy views, portraits, etc. and to carry out iconographic research. See Pierre Lallier, Henri Beau (Musee du Quebec, 1992).
