Scope and content

Fonds consists of photographs taken by John Evans (and others employed by him) during the period 1962-1994 during which time he operated the John Evans Studio in Ottawa, Ontario. The photographs include the following major groups: photographs taken of the construction of the National Arts Centre, and of events there during the 1960s and 1970s; photographs taken for Government House and the Department of External Affairs (Foreign Affairs), including such events as the presentation of letters of credence, visits of state, etc., during the 1970s and 1980s; presentation of medals, orders, and awards such as the Order of Canada, Medal of Merit, etc. at Rideau Hall from 1972 to 1985; portraits of individuals connected with government or with the public service, or nationally notable for other reasons; documentation of meetings, governmental departmental activities, etc., for the Government of Canada in Ottawa, during the 1960s to the 1980s; some views of organizations, companies, etc., located in the National Capital Region, but whose activities are or were national in scope; a portrait session with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. As the majority of the photographs in the fonds were portraits of individuals not of national importance, selection criteria focused on work done for institutions of government, activities at Rideau Hall, and individuals, corporations and associations of national importance.

Biography / Administrative history

John Henry Evans (1925- ) began his photographic career in Britain in 1940; moved to Canada 1948 where he worked with various firms, including Rapid Grip and Batten in Ottawa where in 1962 he set up his own commercial and portrait studio, John Evans Photography. The studio was closed at the end of 1994.
