Scope and content

Sub-series consists of central registry files related to Canadian Government Ships (CGS), a function administered within Marine Services. These files were assigned the 9100 block within the Transport Central Registry and some of the records were brought forward from the old registry of the Department of Marine and Fisheries. The CGS were the forerunner to the Canadian Coast Guard and delivered a variety of marine functions. Subjects include, but are not limited to, the transfer of vessels between agencies, ice-breaking operations, northern voyages, ships' operations, the purchase and sale of ships, shipping accidents, crew logs (1920s-1936), and lists of ships owned by the government. When seeking information relating to vessels owned and operated by the Canadian Government, researchers should also bear in mind that the majority of these vessels were registered at the Port of Ottawa, and that individual or fleets of government ships belong to individual departments. Consequently, records pertaining to vessels both formerly and currently operated by the Canadian Hydrographic Service are found in RG 139; records of Preventative Service vessels are found in RG 18, Records of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police; records of passenger ferries, marine service and coast guard pre-1936 are found in RG 42, Records of the Marine Branch; and records of the Canadian Government Merchant Marine, the Canadian National Steamship Company and Canadian National (West Indies) Steamships will be found in RG 30, Records of the Canadian National Railways.
