Scope and content

Sub-series consists of the Department of Transport's Marine Services files documenting the function of land-based warnings to ships through the subjects of lighthouses and aids to navigation. These files were assigned the 7900 and 8000 block in the Transport registry and some of the records were brought forward from the old registries of the Department of Marine and Fisheries. Subjects include, but are not limited to, lighthouse operations, buoys, beacons, fog alarms, aids to navigation, radar, sound equipment, lighthouse boats, awards for life-saving, and the purchase of and construction on land.
