Scope and content
Series consists of watercolours and drawings by Katherine Jane Ellice (nee Balfour), dated 1838, all originally part of an album. There are depictions of sailors, passengers and cabins on the "H.M.S. Hastings", the first view of Quebec from the ship; views of and around her father-in-law's seigneury at Beauharnois and several interior scenes; portraits including those of Lady Emily and Lady Mary Lambton (daughters of Lord Durham), William Colbourne, Père Papineau (father of Louis-Joseph Papineau), Mrs. Eglantine Balfour ("Tina", her sister); St. Regis Indians; a self-portrait (her image reflected in a mirror); rebels at Beauharnois, etc. The artist kept a diary in which she refers specifically to some of these works.
