Scope and content
Series consists of photographs taken, probably in Montreal in 1847-51, and attributed to the photographer Thomas Coffin Doane. The first is a whole-plate daguerreotype group portrait of Lord and Lady Elgin, with Lady Alice Lambton [sister of Lady Elgin] and Lord Mark Kerr [Lord Elgin's A.D.C.]; the second is a daguerreotype copy of a miniature of Mary Louisa Lambton, Countess of Elgin (1819-1898), second wife of James, 8th Earl of Elgin, 1840s. The group portrait was taken on the occasion of Lord Elgin presiding over Convocation at Upper Canada College, Montreal. Whole-plate daguerreotype, gilt metal mat, in silk lined, embossed brown leather case, the interior of the cover with ink manuscript label identifying the subjects. The 12 b&w photographs includes the portrait of Lord and Lady Elgin with Lady Alice Lambton and Lord Mark Kerr in 1848 but also consists of a portrait of James Bruce, Earl of Elgin and Kincardine, 1848, by T.C. Doane; portraits of Victor Alexander Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin, 1851.
