Series consists of paylists created and/or maintained by the Birtle Agency. The series includes annuity paylists, 1886-1936 (Vols. 1230-1231, 1695-1703); interest paylists, 1907-1936 (Vols. 1266-1268, 1704-1706); and an agency paylist, 1906 (Vol. 1771).

Biography / Administrative history

The first agent for the Birtle Agency in Manitoba, L. Herchmer, was appointed on 15 May 1878 (confirmed by O/C 4275 dated 5 October 1878). The agency was responsible for the Sioux bands on the Assiniboine River. Bands under Treaty 4 were added at a later date. The last remaining bands in the agency were transferred to Portage La Prairie on 17 March 1949. Finding aid 10-12: Guide to Indian Bands and Agencies in Western Canada, 1871-1959.
