Biography / Administrative history

Following the creation of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development in 1966, agencies were joined to form larger administrative units called districts. The Caughnawaga District, which was formed in 1968 as a result of the amalgamation of the Caughnawaga and Oka Agencies, was re-named the Montreal District Office effective 1 November 1970. Responsibility for the Abenakis of the Becanour Band and Odanak Band was transferred from the Lorette Agency to the Montreal District effective 1 December 1970. In 1980 the office was known as the Montreal Service Centre and in 1983 the Montreal office shut down and was absorbed by the Quebec Region and other local offices. Administrative Histories, 1958-1990, (Bands, Agencies, Districts). Unpublished draft in the possession of the RG10 archivist, prepared by Peter Kiefl et al.
