Scope and content
Series consists of records created by the Horticulture Division of the Experimental Farm. The series includes a ledger that was created by the Division of Horticulture at the Central Experimental Farm in the late 1880s. It concerns fruit trees in Orchards across Canada between 1888 and 1890. The information captured in this ledger concerns essentially the growth of the trees. Photographic material spans from c. 1880 to the mid 1970's and includes portraits of Dominion Agrostologists; attendees of the 1924 Rust Conference; the Field Husbandry Division of the Department of Agriculture, at the Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa (1948) and the Experimental Farm Service Conference of Officers (1952). Collection contains three albumen prints of the Experimental Farm at Indian Head N.W.T. (now Saskatchewan). Other images include snapshots from a tour of family farms in Alberta during 1932; varieties of horticultural specimens (some of which were developed at Canadian Experimental Farms) including: trees, hedges, flowers (lilies and lilacs), fruits and vegetables; some photographs show types of damage to sample specimens and images of specimens in various stages of growth. Photos in this collection also document early farm machinery, including tractors created from early automobiles; methods of spraying pesticides; machinery used in the sorting and processing of fruit and plans of typical apple orchard plantings. Photos from agricultural exhibitions from the mid 1910's and then again from the 1950's are also included. In addtion, some photographs were taken of laboratory staff at the Central Experimental Farm in the mid 1970's. Artworks include three pen and ink drawings of farm machinery (1938) and an oil (?) painting of the cross section of a fruit (orange?).
