Biography / Administrative history

Prior to confederation, each province had an "inspector general" who handled financial affairs. The Inspector General's title was changed in 1859 to Minister of Finance by adding a clause to an Act relating to the consolidation of the public debt and the redemption of provincial debentures. There were, however, no changes of departmental organization or duties at this time. Under the new federal government in 1867, this responsibility was allocated to the Minister of Finance.
