Scope and content
Series consists of files that were maintained by two Chief Geologists, George Albert Young, who occupied the position from 1924 to 1943, and George Hanson, 1943 to 1953. The records cover such topics as employment of individuals, publications, field work and dealings with various associations and researchers in the field of geology. The material is arranged in two separate numerical sub-series: the first dating from 1935 to 1952; and, the second, covering the years 1938 to 1954.

Biography / Administrative history
The Chief Geologist of the Geological Survey of Canada was subordinate to the director and was responsible for the planning and co-ordination of the scientific activities of the Survey. The Chief Geologist supervised such matters as field assignments, estimates, programs and the validation of maps preparatory to publication. RG45 General Inventory
