Scope and content

Series consists in part of the general correspondence received by the Rt. Hon. James G. Gardiner (1883-1962), Minister of Agriculture from 1935 to 1957. This correspondence is primarily from individual farmers and rural and farm organizations, and mirrors the concerns of farmers and the development of agriculture in three important periods: the rural hardships of the Depression, the rebirth and government regulation of agriculture during World War II, and the post-war conditions of agriculture's re-entry into the world market place. The correspondence is arranged chronologically as it was received by Gardiner, excepting Volumes 3596 to 3597 which contain his correspondence regarding the Prairie Farm Assistance Act and the Bacon Board. Most of these records are slim "files" containing the single piece of incoming correspondence plus Gardiner's reply. Artificial file numbers have been added by the National Archives of Canada in order to organize the collection; there were also no original file titles, those appearing on the list having been created by National Archives of Canada to give some meaning to the collection. Each individual "file" has been listed from 1936 to February, 1948, the most important part of the collection; the final three years' correspondence (1948-1951) has been grouped into monthly units with the most significant or recurring subjects being highlighted on the file list. This file list is the finding aid to the series. Other records of ministers are included in this series. Accessions pertaining to ministers John Wise (1979-1980; 1984-1988); Donald Mazankowski (1991-1993); William McKnight (1991-1993); Charles James Mayer (1993); Ralph Goodale (1993-1997).
