Biography / Administrative history

The Quebec Regional Office was established in Quebec City in 1966. During the 1967 departmental reorganization, the ten agencies in Quebec were transformed into four districts and two agencies. Increased responsibility was moved to regional offices as part of the Department's decision to make the Indian Affairs Branch more accessible to native people and to hire more native people in the Regions and to assist in the development of self-government on Reserves. In 1973 the administration of the Viger, Restigouche, Micmacs of Maria, and Gaspé Bands, Sept-Isles District, as well as the Hurons of Lorette Band, Lorette Agency, was transferred to the Quebec Regional Office. The Sept-Isles and Lac Saint-Jean District offices were closed April 1, 1988 and the responsibility for the bands formerly attached to these offices was transferred to the Quebec Regional Office.
