The Shellbrook Indian Agency in Saskatchewan was established 1 January 1976 and was then designated as a district effective 1 May 1986. The Pelican Lake and Witchekan Lake Bands of the Shellbrook District were merged into the North West District effective 1 January 1990. On the same date, the Big River and Ahtakakoop Bands of the Shellbrook District, were amalgamated into the North Central District.
