Scope and content

Series consists of a wide variety of general accounts records created and maintained by the Department. The series includes the following: duplicate receipts, 1872-1877 (Vol. 473); paylists for the Department, 1848-1864 (Vols. 636, 999); annuity orders signed by various Saugeen Indians drawing against annuity funds, 1872-1877 (Vols. 472-473); general accounts, Manitoba and the North-West, 1873-1890, including Paylists, 1880-1885 (Vol. 1034); documents concerning reports of the Treasury, 1932-1954 (Vols. 1046-1048); consolidated ledgers, 1884-1930 (Vols. 1049-1054); consolidated ledgers, education, 1910-1932 (Vols. 1055-1060); cash books, 1846- 1870 (Vols. 1061-1063); account of loans, 1910-1936 (Vols. 1064- 1065); audited accounts, claims against Indian debtors, Six Nations, 1880-1885 (Vol. 1067); letterbooks, accounts, returns and estimates, 1881-1888 (Vols. 9190 and 1068); letterbooks, accounts, 1892-1912 (Vols. 1069 and 5850); head office estimates, 1878-1880 (Vol. 1138); duplicate annuity and interest paylists, 1856-1886, 1926-1959 (Vols. 1729, 8097-8106); paylists and quarterly summaries, 1945-1954 (Vols. 9003-9005); paylists for Western Treaties, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7, 1871-1884 (Vols. 1675-1678); as well as paylists for Western Treaties 8 and 11, 1921-1945 (Vols. 5994-5997); consolidated fund ledgers, 1881-1932 (Vols. 9189, 11635 to 11687); bank accounts, 1849-1861 (Vol. 11688); annuity and interest distribution addressograph imprints, 1953-1958 (Vols. 11864-11865); and financial statements of Indian accounts, 1978-1979 (Vols. 11924-11944). Volumes 9220 and 11880-11883 are Bull Fund Accounts set up for some bands to aid in the purchase of cattle for ranching operations. In about 1913, a separate ledger was set up solely for these accounts (see volume 9220) but until that time, they were included with individual's savings accounts. Volume 9220 also contains two pages relating to the snowshoe industry in Port Arthur, 1935-1936.
