This sub-series consists of two documents: a letter to Major T. E. Campbell, Civil Secretary to Lord Elgin, 10 September 1847 from W. Macaulay of Picton, CW, concerning Carleton Island, the seat of Government and issues of defence (original, 4 pages, wanting half the text; with a 9-page typescript of the entire text); and a letter of introduction to lord Elgin from Lord [Ebrington] on behalf of Captain Richard Pattinson, 18 March 1848 (4 pages plus envelope 1 page).

Custodial history
Previous descriptions for these two documents omit mention of their source. The 1847 letter appeared first in the 1961 Preliminary Inventory. The 1848 letter was accessioned in 1976.
