Scope and content
Colonial Office 430 consists of registers of correspondence for the patronage subject class. These registers contain a brief description and reference to the applications for employment files in CO 429, Patronage, Original Correspondence. It appears that the assistant private secretaries of the Colonial Secretary handled applications for employment, though information relating to the use or changes in use of these two classes, CO 429 and CO 430, is not readily available. Apparently, the registered patronage correspondence from 1881 to 1886 was entered in the general colony registers such as CO 570 and CO 694. The 13 volumes of CO 430 are divided into two sections: "Miscellaneous Offices" and "Individuals", of which the "Individuals" section is very much the more substantial portion. The applications registered under "Miscellaneous Offices" are chronologically arranged, while those under "Individuals" are arranged alphabetically according to the first letter of the name of the applicant and then chronologically under each letter of the alphabet. The National Archives of Canada has acquired microfilm copies of volumes 1-5 and 7. This material is available on microfilm reels B-1649, B-1657 to B-1659.
