Scope and content
Colonial Office 570 is composed of secret entry books and registers of out-letters. This material is available on microfilm reels B-1660 and B-1667. Vol. 1 includes both an entry book and a register of out-letters; vol. 2 consists of a register of out-letters. The registers and entry books of CO 570 follow the usual classification and registry procedures. However, there is no "Individuals" category of correspondence in these registers. The "Reference" column usually contains a reference to a secret in-letter. Hence 55 in the "Reference" column refers to the secret in-letter numbered 55 for the same year as the out-letter in the appropriate section of the in-letter class CO 694, Colonies General, Register of Secret Correspondence. A reference such as "Gov Secret 98" points to a governor's secret despatch number 98 for the same year as the out-letter. The corresponding in-letter may be registered in the "colony" class register or in CO 694. CO 570 may be used as a limited finding aid to secret out-letters from the Colonial Office for the period 1870 to 1895. The following list gives the Index Room number assigned by the PRO to each volume of CO 570, as well as the years covered by the registers: CO 570, vol. 1, number 18764, years 1870-1873; CO 570, vol. 2, number 15636, years 1874-1895.
