Scope and content

Colonial Office 616, in effect the wartime version of CO 42, Canada, Original Correspondence, contains First World War correspondence between the dominions and other colonial governments and the Colonial Office as well as between the Colonial Office and other British government departments such as the Foreign Office, the War Office, the Board of Trade and the Admiralty regarding matters concerning the colonies. There is an index at the beginning of each volume. It has been copied in its entirety and is available on microfilm reels B-3960 to B-4018. Predominantly concerned with economic and trade problems and the allocation of resources for the war effort, this class also contains correspondence regarding Canada's individual wartime problems and involvement. Such topics include Canadian wartime censorship, recruiting difficulties, the establishment of a policy regarding enemy aliens residing in Canada, the problems of venereal disease among Canadian troops, and the Vladivostock expedition.

Finding aid No. 90, British Records on Microfilm, lists the material on each reel of microfilm indicating reel number, volume number, date and category of correspondence (despatches, offices or miscellaneous). MSS0090 (Paper)

CO 752 (Register of Correspondence) and CO 753 (Register of Out-letters) may also be used as a finding aid for CO 616. Contemporary registers have limitations and must be used with caution. Nevertheless, they are a useful source, indicating at a glance the activity and interests of any department. In addition to these finding aids, the indexes located at the beginning of each volume will be particularly useful. (Microform)

Additional information

Arrangement note
This class follows the usual system of Arrangement for colonial office classes. The correspondence for each year is divided first into the fundamental categories of Despatches, Offices (i.e., Admiralty, Foreign Office, War Office, etc.), and Individuals or Miscellaneous. It is then organized chronologically and by dominion and colony. Thus, all despatches from Canada arriving in Britain on a specific date can be found together.
